Office Policy Manuals In Ship Management

By Cindy Ingram

In ship management, security is a major concern and owners are seriously taking this matter by making vessels armed and loaded. The continuous attacks of pirates on industrial and luxury ship over the past three years served as a wake up call to reassess safety and security measures on vessels. Today, ship management personnel choose one of these two options in protecting their ship: hiring a private security company, or forming its own army. Owners are eager to spend a considerable amount of money in order to make sure the safety of their ship.

The cost of arming a ship would range from $30,000-50,000, as estimated by those who are familiar with the ins-and-outs of this industry. This amount will cover for employing personnel who are trained both in arm-to-arm combat and in handling new combat equipment. Arming a vessel comes with a high price tag, but ship owners say that it is a worthy expenditure.

Besides arming their vessels, owners are also upgrading their communication standards for better coordination with the Coast Guard and other naval authorities at sea. Outdated equipment are replaced by state-of-the-art satellites. They are also find it necessary to train in-house personnel on security protocols to prepare them if attacks occur or there is a security breach.

With the attacks becoming more threatening by the year, ship management experts suggests that owners should learn to safeguard their vessels instead of looking to the government for protection. As Per Gellestrup, (a negotiator who played a major role during peace talks with Somali pirates in 2008) stated, .. even the leading naval powers in the world have not been able to do anything about this problem and they won't until we do something essentially ashore in Somalia. Until then, we will not resolve this problem.

Ship management is almost similar to running a household with many children. The threat that one of them might be hurt is always there, that is why you always have to be prepared for any unfortunate attack on them on your home. Arming a ship might seem too much for some, but the vast sea can't provide any protection. Hence the key to protecting assets, properties, resources and lives is to prepare vigilantly.
