How Will You Know if You Have a Lemon?

By Seomul Evans

One of the worst things that anyone can learn from a recent investment is to know that the recent acquisition is a 'dud'. This kind of realization can surely pain consumers, especially those who really saved in order to acquire that product. This scenario is applicable to almost all markets. And this is true as well for the automotive industry. There have been many stories told about someone who bought a new car, only to realize soon after the car is a 'lemon'. This car can either have one major defect or has been subjected to numerous repairs but still the car will not simply work. Or there are situations when after one defect has been addressed, another one shows up to frustrate the owner.

In the 1960s and the 1970s, consumers are partially assisted thanks to the presence of the warranty that comes with the purchase of the vehicle. The manufacturers of these 'lemon cars' assist the owners in terms of repairs as long as this is still covered by the warranty. The problem with this set-up is that the purchaser was obliged to keep the car even though this has been marred with factory defects. And after the warranty period, all other costs related to repair were shouldered by the owner. During those times, the purchaser was always on the losing end of the table when it comes to purchasing and owning a 'lemon car'.

But not this time; the current times provide for more and better protection for car owners. Right now, consumers are protected by the lemon laws. These are car warranty laws set up in all states and these are in place in order to protect the consumers. There are certain terms and rules on the lemon law that can provide protection for the consumers. For example, if the car cannot be fixed then the purchaser must be compensated either by a new car or a refund. The decision as to the kind of remedy will be dependent on the state or the locality where the purchaser resides. Lemon laws are in place to help, but it isn't good idea to shop and own cars with blind eyes. It's best to learn if you are on the losing end by owning a 'lemon'. Provided below is your checklist to know if you own a 'lemon':

1. Check the repair history of the car. Has the car been in the shop more than four times for the same defect?
2. Has the car been in the repair shop for nearly three weeks and still it is awaiting more repairs and tune up jobs?
3. Has the car been in shop for repair yet nothing was fixed l under warranty? And does the problem recur even after the warranty has ended?
4. Is the car subjected to a number of checks and repairs by the same shop, yet no success has been noted? And when you change shop, you still get the same results?
5. Or has the dealer refused to repair an issue even though the car is still under warranty?
An answer of 'Yes' to at least one of the questions posed above indicates that you may have a 'lemon' inside your garage. If this is your case, it's best to act fast and get the help of professionals specializing in the field.
