6 Steps To Build Your First Boat

By Martin Reid

With the availability of the internet, there is not much that one cannot build for themselves with all the free plans available. The nice part is that you don't have to have extensive skills on how to do it either. The same applies when it comes to building your own boat. It's not all that difficult and here are the basic steps.

Step 1 You will need to decide which method you want to use to build your boat as there are several. The easiest would be the "Stitch and Glue" technique, especially if you don't have much experience at carpentry.

Step 2 Now what is the purpose of the boat? Here is where you need to put a little thought into what is it exactly do you want your boat to do? Is it a speed boat you are after? Alternatively, something that is going to look impressive as it floats along the water? Then again, maybe it's a simple row boat you have your mind set on.

Step 3 Once you have made the decision as to your technique and the type of boat you want it's time to search for plans. It's unlikely that you are going to want to design the boat yourself if you have no experience with either boat building or designing. You can search the internet for some free boat building designs. If you can't find what you are looking for free, then consider purchasing some. There are many available to check out, and you are sure to find something that suits you. You can find these at Google, or Amazon.com. Don't forget that you will be able to do some customizing, but nothing that affects the safety or the structure of the boat.

Step 4 You may want to consider purchasing boat building kits either on or off line. These usually have all the material you need as well as the plans and instructions. If this is your first boat building experience then this is probably the best, safest and the most cost effective method of doing it. In fact, if you go with something simple for your first project you may be able to do so for around $250.

Step 5 Once you have received your boat building kit you just need to lay out your materials as you are going to use them. The majority of your materials will be fiberglass as well as plywood.

Step 6 It's always good if you can have a trial run at something your building. It's pretty difficult when it comes to building your own boat, but there is a way. Just simply construct a miniature model out of paper. This will give you a familiarization with the individual steps. It will also give you an idea of what your finished product will end up like.

So basically these are a few straight forward steps to get you going on your boat building project. Remember though that time is involved here as well. Make sure that you allot enough time to finish your project so you don't end up with a half built boat sitting in your backyard.
