Minivan Or SUV - Which One Is Ideal For Your Family?

By Demetrius Eilders

Has the family unit grown so big that the family vehicle has become a tight squeeze? Should you just face facts and go ahead and trade in your smaller vehicle for the larger one you really need? So, is a minivan or perhaps a sport utility vehicle the better option when it comes to buying a larger vehicle for your family?

They both have sufficient room, with comfortable sitting for five to eight passengers, along with entertainment systems for the rear seats. Each vehicle has standard safety features like air bags and anti-lock brakes; having said that, an SUV is more inclined to roll over than a minivan. You must look at your family's needs, and a closer look at the individual vehicles to determine which one belongs in your garage. Which one has the right styling, the best fuel economy, the towing capacity you need, or the most cargo and passenger space, to best meet your requirements.

The design and style of a car or truck is usually just an issue of what you actually prefer. Many of us favor an SUV because the outdoor sporty look makes a nice impression. The minivan is going to permanently be associated with soccer moms and the carpool. The majority of men wouldn't be caught dead driving a minivan, which explains why you commonly see minivans with women in the driver's seats. Young children enjoy riding around in a minivan but, when they become teenagers, they consider it embarrassing to be delivered to school in a minivan. Where the minivans win out is within the fuel economy, as the SUVs are gas guzzlers. If you're looking for the top vehicle economy wise, the minivan is the way to go.

Servicing and insurance are usually lower for the minivan, so if you would like to be cool and stylish, you are going to have to pay for it. Although the passenger and cargo spaces are virtually identical in both vehicles, children enjoy the roomy feel of a minivan. The lower step-in height of the minivan, combined with the large windows, tends to make the minivan a better choice when there are young children. If you are the weekend type, who hauls a boat to the nearby lakes, you'll want the SUV, with its superior towing capacities. Therefore, it seems fairly evident that the needs of your family determine your choice of vehicle more than your preferences do.

When it comes right down to it, the safety record of the particular vehicle may be the key factor in your final decision. Despite the fact that both vehicles have similar safety features, SUVs present a higher risk for rollover when an accident occurs. On the flip side, rollovers only happen in a very small proportion of accidents and SUVs provide superior protection in two-car collisions. If the chance of a rollover weighs intensely on your mind, you will no doubt feel much better if you purchase a minivan.
