Boat Covers - A Necessity for All Boat Owners

By Martin Reid

As with anything that may be in storage you probably want to consider a cover. They are a great way to protect your investment and should be considered as one of the maintenance needs of the boat. Even if you can use your boat year round you will still want to protect it from the elements when you are not using it.

Boat covers are inexpensive in comparison to what they protect the boat from. Some of the benefits include protection from the sun for the interior, any electronics are protected from all the elements, they keep dirt and grime out while being transported, keep small animals and reptiles out of the boat when it is not in use, and they protect the boat from the weather. Basically, from anything that can damage the boat over time. Nothing will totally protect the boat but added to your maintenance plan it can help your boat last a long time.

As with most covers they come in two types. Universal that comes in several sizes to fit a majority of the boats and custom designed to fit perfectly on the specific make and model of the boat, designed specifically for your needs. Which you choose is up to you and how much you are willing to spend. More money spent does not necessarily mean better protection. So do your research.

Universal covers are great if you are concerned about the cost of the cover. The biggest problem being that they may not fit your boat exactly. Usually all you do is measure the length and beam of your boat. Because they are designed for the size and not the specific model they may have loose corners and not fit snug where you want it to. Possibly causing issues as you drive down the road or during a storm.

Custom covers are designed specifically for your make and model of boat, usually available in a large variety of fabrics and colors. Offering a variety of options for a special fit, they are designed to the needs of the boat owner and their particular boat. Fitting nice and snug around the boat and being hard to just simply come off the boat during a storm or during travel.

As with anything you buy you need to do the research on the large variety of options available. Read reviews, ask other owners, and check on prices from all sources. Use the Internet to price compare and compare materials. Make sure you check on material for your specific environment. What may work well in one environment may not work so well in another. You want to make sure you choose the right material and right fit for what you want to spend on the cover.

Once you have made your decision to buy a boat cover you will know you made an investment in protecting your investments in your boat, allowing you to enjoy it for longer with a smaller maintenance cost over the long run.
