Certain Smells Could Indicate Car Troubles

By Edmont Pescatelini

Everyone enjoys the smell of their new car. The mixture of leather and plastic definitely excites the aromatic senses. And for some people that is not enough and they find themselves purchasing an air freshener that smells like strawberries or vanilla. That's fine, everyone finds distinct aromas appealing. But what happens when you start smelling something in your car that you in no way smelled before. In this article, we will take a look at specifically what certain smells could mean for your car.

One of the first problems that pop into your head is a sick sweet smell. If you have this smell, it could imply that you have a leak in your coolant system. Although this may be a minor leak, it is something you will want to get fixed right away before it causes other troubles. You may smell an odor that is really strong. This strong smell indicates the heater core is dripping. You will have to have this checked out and fixed because the fumes are dangerous if inhaled for too long.

Many of us will discover that as soon as they are in the car they can smell the exhaust. It is reasonably possible that you've got a hole in your exhaust system. If the smell is very detectable, it could mean that you've got gaps in the floorboard caused by rust or the doors are not sealing very well. Regardless of the reason you happen to be smelling the exhaust again this is something to get fixed as breathing in these fumes can cause severe health issues.

Some time back, I decided to go to the gas station to fill my tank and when I left, I really could still smell the gas. It didn't trouble me at the outset, but the next day I could still smell gas. It turned out that I had developed a leak at the top section of my fuel tank. This is almost certainly one of the most dangerous smells because with the leaking gas even a small spark could ignite it. Not a single thing is more frightening when compared to your fuel tank catching on fire. So in a nutshell, should you smell gas in your car, get it checked by a mechanic without delay.

Finally, you may experience the odor of rotten eggs coming from your car. If you discover this kind of smell in your car it is more than likely caused by the fact that your catalytic converter has become clogged. Which suggests that the exhaust is not releasing properly which could result in some serious damage to your car. So if you have that rotten egg smell, bring your car in and have it checked out.

Obviously you could always end up detecting other things. Consequently, don't just dismiss it, take your car in to make sure that there is nothing faulty.
