Verifying the Safety of Your Car Tires

By Daniel Akinson

Performing proper car tire checks is a very important part of vehicle maintenance and road safety.

Checking that your tires are fully inflated is one of the more frequently performed parts of an inspection. It is critical that the pressure of tires is checked before the tires get warm, since variations in temperature can impact the accuracy of the reading.

The friction caused by driving increases the tire temperature and expands the tire itself. Having low tire pressure is even more dangerous than having pressure that is a little bit high, as it makes your tires more prevalent to wear and tear.

Driving is a balancing act, that means that both your tires and wheels need to be balanced. The best way to ensure even wearing is to regularly rotate your tires as a way of maximizing the amount of time and miles that they will last. Whenever you feel a vibrating sensation while steering the car, you can assume that you are in need of wheel and tire balancing. New tires must be balanced properly. When your tires or wheels aren't balanced properly, your steering and the suspension system of your vehicle can become affected.

When you rotate your tires you don't just switch the position of the tires and wheels, but you should also take this opportunity to inspect for any mechanical issues or apparent patterns of wear and tear.

Among the elements to be checked is that of tread depth on the tires. The tire tread generally has contact with road surfaces. There is a thick rubber material that gives your car the grip or traction as you drive down the road. Formal guidelines regarding tread depth actually exist, since certain motorists insist on using dangerous tires with low tread in order to avoid the cost of replacement. In short, the less tread, the less maneuverability, traction, and breaking ability.

The next thing you should inspect are the sidewalls of your tires. On the walls of the tires you are looking for holes or cuts. Based on the position and size of any holes or slashes, you will be able to decide whether repair or replacement is necessary.

By properly maintaining your vehicle tires you are not only aiding in the safety of yourself and others, but saving yourself expensive vehicle repairs and early tires replacements. There are a lot of small and large holes out on the road. Thus, when you drive, it is important to keep out of such holes, because hitting one squarely can result in immediate loss of tire pressure. By doing this you can potentially lose control of your vehicle and cause an accident.
