The Porsche Boxster - A Fabulous Two-Seater That Is Awesome

By Gordon Y. Holmes

The Porsche Boxster originally emerged on the market in 1996 and is one of the leading choices when it comes to roadsters that handle the road impeccably. The Boxster continues to be an extremely powerful vehicle with awesome speed and has only been given minor interior changes and horsepower upgrades through the years. Porsche has a tendency to retain a car's look for many years when the particular model is a big hit.

In 2005, Porsche came out with an even more compelling second-generation Boxster which did not stray from their normal design process. It looks like a Porsche Spyder but has two seats with a mid-engine and six cylinders as its earlier version did. Using the new Boxster, you still find that greater than 50% of the makeup and electronics are taken from the 911 Carrera. The 2005 has a lot more intensity than the 2004 version due to alterations of the torque and increased horsepower. The acceleration and high end capability made the 2005 Boxster S a virtually exact equivalent of the more costly Porsche 911 Carrera.

No other car can match up to the peculiar sound resembling a trombone that is emanated with the Boxster's exhaust. Since the engine is a scaled-down version of the six-cylinder that can be found in the Carrera, that makes this an amazing thing. A five-speed manual transmission is what the Boxster is sold with normally, but if you want a six-speed, it is optional. It can also be fitted with the Porsche-designed automatic transmission, the five-speed Tiptronic, which is superb. A newer trend in which automatic vehicles are shifted physically has made this possible. Although the Boxster is known as a top quality vehicle inside and out, it is certainly not a luxurious car.

Preceding versions of the car were judged for appearing to be low-budget but the interior has received some quality upgrades in newer versions. With a modified gearshift, and paneling with a titanium look, the middle console has been improved. The seat designs in the current model are nicer with additional support and an optimal body shape. The Boxster has a small trunk in the rear of the car, and one more, larger one under the front hood, so carrying luggage is not a problem. The Boxster offers a nice feature in its powered convertible top which has the power to rapidly open and shut at speeds close to 30 mph. Heated glass makes up the back window and the roof top is made up of three layers of sound-muffling padded cloth that will hold up in all sorts of weather.

Referred to as a mid-engine car, the Boxster's six-cylinder engine can be found to the rear of the seats before you get to the rear axle. You will not find the engine underneath the hood because it is not really there. To view the engine, you will have to lift the car so you can get under it. A much more even weight distribution is really a welcome benefit of the car's engine being situated near the center of the car. This is the reason the Porshe Boxster handles so effectively.
