How To Look After Your Car Tyres

By Hardofu Rocklau

Car tyres are expensive to replace. They are also critical for your car's performance, as well as your own safety. Therefore, it's important that you take care of them. Thankfully, there are a number of things you can do to prolong the life of your car tyres and ensure they are in the best possible shape.

The first is to regularly check your tyre pressure (and that means weekly or at least monthly). This will ensure that they last longer. Your tyres should always be at the pressure recommended in your car manual. And make sure you don't forget the spare!

Also make sure that you only check your tyres when they are cool. Never check them after a long drive, as you will not get an accurate reading if they are hot.

To check your tyre pressure, you can use a tyre gauge which should be available at your local service station. However, it's a good idea to buy your own - those available at service stations are not always correct, and it's good to have one handy if you need it. It's important to note that you can't check your tyre pressure by looking -- you must use a gauge.

The second rule is to make sure that your wheels are correctly aligned. If they're not, your tyres will wear out more quickly, and you'll have to replace them sooner. An easy way to do this is to get them checked when you put your car in for a service.

Finally, you should always check for punctures and other damage. If you spot any problems, get it checked out immediately. You should also check your treads regularly -- if they are worn down, your safety may be compromised. If in doubt, get them looked at by a professional.
