Hvar During Winter

By Mark Zelg

One more summer is over. But who says that you cannot enjoy in summer activities throughout the entire year. You cannot swim in the sea, of course, but you can enjoy the other things. Perhaps you can sail around the island of Hvar?

Island of Hvar has a very good climate, simply ideal for yachting. However, beware that the route around the island is 80 miles long so don't go yachting around the island if you cannot handle that route.

You can see all the beauties of the island only from the sea. You can see the cathedral, the Arsenal with the theater, Franciscan Monastery and the seafront.

Time that you spend on cruising around the Pakleni Islands is worth every second. You only have to be aware of the shallows and you need to pay attention to them.

Island of Scedro has been an important port from the ancient times. It is best to anchor in the Lovisce harbor on the Scedro Island. The islet is mostly unpopulated during the winter.

Beautiful scenery awaits you if you decide to sail along the southern side of the Hvar Island. Sveta Nedjelja, Ivan Dolac and Zavala are three little places that are located there. Settlements are surrounded by vineyards and they are very important for oenology of the island. It is very interesting that almost every available piece of land is covered by vineyards.

During your sailing on the northern side of the island, you must be aware of north winds. The town that is located on the northern side of the island is Jelsa. It is very important to know that the port in Jelsa is protected with three breakwaters and it is safe and pleasant port except when Bura Wind blows. It is not recommended to sail into the port when the Bura blows.

Sailing from Jelsa to Stari Grad is 15 nautical miles long route. During your sailing you can enjoy in some of 40 bays that are situated on that route. The panorama is very beautiful. Magnificent panorama also complements the islet Zecevo. When you sail into the Stari Grad Bay you will see the panorama that looks like a fjord. In the south side you will see hills which are steeply descending to the sea. In one word, the beauty of the bay will surprise you. Also, sailors love that bay because there is always some kind of wind.
