Why Buy A Used Car

By

If you are in the market for a new car consider buying a used one instead. There are many advantages to buying a used car, but the biggest one of the course is price. You will pay far less for a used car than you would have to buy a new car.

What the new car dealerships won't tell you is that as soon as you drive a brand new car off the lot, the value goes down as it is now considered a used vehicle. In the first two years of owning a brand new car, its value will decrease by around 30%.

That's not to say you won't get a great deal from a new car dealership, but for an even better deal, head to a used car lot or search your local classifieds for a well maintained car or truck that won't blow your bank balance.

In the UK, by law, any vehicle sold to you must be fit for purpose. In other words it must be driveable and street legal. If there are any problems with the vehicle the dealer should tell you, again the law obliges them to do so. Consumer law in the UK means that if the vehicle breaks down within a few days or weeks of your paying for it you are entitled to the cost of repair being covered by the dealer.

Provided you buy your car from a reliable used car dealer you should have no problems. However, if you have a friend who knows a bit about mechanics take them with you when you buy your used car.

Looking for a used car with only one previous and careful owner, keep an eye on mileage and discuss previous accidents. Look at wheels to make sure they don't need to be replaced in the very near future and ask for a test drive so that you can listen out for any mechanical problems.

Make sure you ask about the vehicle's most recent MOT. Make sure that it is valid and check that it has some time to run. If it only has a month to go do a quick check of things covered by the MOT to work out if it will pass its next MOT. Checking the tyres and wipers are 2 items that are easy to check. Spotting that they are worn means you can ask for a bit of money off because you are going to have to replace them in order to get it through the MOT.
